Preparations for Hate Week are in full swing and the staffs of all the Ministries are working overtime: ". . .stands had to be erected, effigies built, slogans coined, songs written, rumours circulated, photographs faked."<\/p>\n

What does"circulated"mean?<\/a><\/p>\n

A new war poster has appeared all over London, showing a frightening image of a soldier with a submachine gun. "The proles, normally apathetic about the war, were being lashed into one of their periodical frenzies of patriotism."<\/p>\n

What does"apathetic"mean?<\/a><\/p>\n

Winston's physical, emotional and psychological health has improved since he and Julia began meeting in the secret room: "The process of life had ceased to be intolerable, he had no longer any impulse to make faces at the telescreen or shout curses at the top of his voice."<\/p>\n

What does"intolerable"mean?<\/a><\/p>\n

Julia is younger than Winston, and this makes a difference between them. Unlike Winston, "She had grown up since the Revolution and was too young to remember the ideological battles of the fifties and sixties."<\/p>\n

Winston observed that "In some ways [Julia]was far more acute than Winston, and far less susceptible to Party propaganda."<\/p>\n

Another difference between Winston and Julia was that "In the ramifications of party doctrine she had not the faintest interest."<\/p>\n
