However, the heterozygote phenotype occasionally does appear to be\u00a0<strong>intermediate<\/strong>\u00a0between the two parents. For example, in the snapdragon,\u00a0<em>Antirrhinum majus<\/em>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/openstax.org\/books\/biology-2e\/pages\/12-2-characteristics-and-traits#fig-ch12_02_04\">Figure 12.7<\/a>), a cross between a homozygous parent with white flowers (<em>C<sup>W<\/sup>C<sup>W<\/sup><\/em>) and a homozygous parent with red flowers (<em>C<sup>R<\/sup>C<sup>R<\/sup><\/em>) will produce offspring with pink flowers (<em>C<sup>R<\/sup>C<sup>W<\/sup><\/em>). (Note that different genotypic abbreviations are used for Mendelian extensions to distinguish these patterns from simple\u00a0<strong>dominance<\/strong>\u00a0and recessiveness.) This pattern of\u00a0<strong>inheritance<\/strong>\u00a0is described as\u00a0<strong>incomplete dominance<\/strong>, denoting the expression of two contrasting alleles such that the individual displays an\u00a0<strong>intermediate<\/strong>\u00a0phenotype. The allele for red flowers is incompletely dominant over the allele for white flowers. However, the results of a heterozygote self-cross can still be predicted, just as with Mendelian dominant and recessive crosses.
