Mendel\u2019s results, that traits are inherited as dominant and recessive pairs, contradicted the view at that time that offspring exhibited a blend of their parents\u2019 traits. However, the heterozygote phenotype occasionally does appear to be\u00a0intermediate<\/strong>\u00a0between the two parents. For example, in the snapdragon,\u00a0Antirrhinum majus<\/em>\u00a0(Figure 12.7<\/a>), a cross between a homozygous parent with white flowers (CW<\/sup>CW<\/sup><\/em>) and a homozygous parent with red flowers (CR<\/sup>CR<\/sup><\/em>) will produce offspring with pink flowers (CR<\/sup>CW<\/sup><\/em>). (Note that different genotypic abbreviations are used for Mendelian extensions to distinguish these patterns from simple\u00a0dominance<\/strong>\u00a0and recessiveness.)
