clicktoclose=”true” scroll=”true”]<br \/>\n[accordion-item title=”Transcript”]<br \/>\nyou may have heard the classic line to<br \/>\nsail the seven seas and as romantic as<br \/>\nit might sound you should probably know<br \/>\nit’s not a very accurate saying a<br \/>\nbecause the Seas the Fraser first to our<br \/>\noceans and B there aren’t seven oceans<br \/>\nthere’s five the Arctic the Atlantic the<br \/>\nIndian the Pacific and the Southern<br \/>\nOcean all one if you feel all the oceans<br \/>\nbelong as one big ocean which some<br \/>\npeople do and unsurprisingly call it the<br \/>\nwild ocean that’s not a very interesting<br \/>\nname but I guess it makes perfect sense<br \/>\nthat you all do shion’s as one big ocean<br \/>\nunlike islands and continents that<br \/>\naren’t clear-cut beginnings and ends for<br \/>\nthem so how do we decide when one ocean<br \/>\nends and another begins well there<br \/>\ndoesn’t seem to be one definitive reason<br \/>\nas to why they have been divided the way<br \/>\nthey have like a lot of country borders<br \/>\nthey’re man-made divisions using the<br \/>\nopened crust and the continents to help<br \/>\ndivide this one huge ocean but the other<br \/>\nissue with that saying is that it calls<br \/>\nthe oceans seas and water turn ocean and<br \/>\nsea have become fairly interchangeable<br \/>\nthere is a difference between the two<br \/>\nwhat oceans are the large of the two<br \/>\nseas a part of oceans specifically the<br \/>\npart of the ocean where they meet the<br \/>\nland and sea is tend to be surrounded by<br \/>\nland in example the Irish Sea which is<br \/>\npart of the Atlantic Ocean and sits<br \/>\nbetween the land masses of Ireland and<br \/>\nGreat Britain with the Isle of Man<br \/>\ntucked within it and in regards to the<br \/>\n7c saying trust me there are more than<br \/>\nseven seas but anyway this is named<br \/>\nexplain not ocean explain there is<br \/>\nhowever a cool small channel called the<br \/>\nabyss I stumbled across that doesn’t<br \/>\nmake fun educational videos all about<br \/>\nthe ocean so you should check them out<br \/>\nhelp us more crater and what not we are<br \/>\nhere how to talk about how the five<br \/>\noceans got their names and you know what<br \/>\nthree of the five oceans don’t have the<br \/>\nmost exciting names of course the word<br \/>\nocean is in the name of all the Earth’s<br \/>\noceans so let’s just cover it now as<br \/>\nopposed to explain every time the word<br \/>\nocean itself has earliest-known roots in<br \/>\nthe Greek Okeanos which was believed to<br \/>\nbe the great freshwater stream that<br \/>\nencircled the entire disk earth the<br \/>\nIndian Ocean is named that simply<br \/>\nbecause of its location around the<br \/>\nIndian subcontinent<br \/>\nnamed after the country of India so how<br \/>\ndid India Gates name yes I am speaking a<br \/>\ncountry name explained into this video<br \/>\nit’s believed the name India is a<br \/>\ncorruption of the word Sindhu which was<br \/>\nsupposedly the Sanskrit word for sea and<br \/>\nanother name for the Indus River the<br \/>\nriver that India is named after so yes<br \/>\nthe Indian Ocean is an ocean named after<br \/>\na subcontinent which is named after a<br \/>\ncountry which is named after a river<br \/>\nnamed section the southern ocean of<br \/>\ncourse too doesn’t have the most<br \/>\nthrilling name is the ocean in the south<br \/>\nor the word south are coming from the<br \/>\nproto-germanic son fast<br \/>\npossibly literally meaning the son side<br \/>\nyet the Southern Ocean has a couple<br \/>\nother names it is also known as the<br \/>\nAntarctic Ocean and the Austral ocean<br \/>\nAustral comes from the Latin word for<br \/>\nSouth Oster and the name the Antarctic<br \/>\nOcean comes from the fact that the<br \/>\noceans around Antarctica Antarctica<br \/>\ncomes from the Greek word for opposite<br \/>\nthe Arctic with Arctic coming from the<br \/>\nGreek word meaning near the bare<br \/>\nnorthern this is referred to one of the<br \/>\ntwo of bear-baiting northern<br \/>\nconstellations I’m getting some serious<br \/>\ndeja vu right now but with explaining<br \/>\nthe etymology of antarctica and arctic<br \/>\ni’ve also explained where the arctic<br \/>\nocean name comes from you guys totally<br \/>\ndidn’t realize or sneaking another ocean<br \/>\netymology in there did you<br \/>\nso while there are interesting stories<br \/>\nin those names none of those free oceans<br \/>\nhave wholly unique names and are merely<br \/>\nnamed after where they are this of<br \/>\ncourse changes however with the Atlantic<br \/>\nand Pacific oceans the name of the<br \/>\nAtlantic Ocean has its origins in<br \/>\nancient Greek mythology the oldest known<br \/>\nmention of Atlantic is in the histories<br \/>\nof Herodotus from around 450 BC however<br \/>\nit was Atlantis he wrote not Atlantic<br \/>\nAtlantis comes from the name of the<br \/>\nGreek Titan Atlas with Atlantis meaning<br \/>\nat the island of Atlas and in some<br \/>\ncontext the Sea of atlas yet the actual<br \/>\nocean we know or hadn’t been recorded<br \/>\nyet Atlantis had only existed in mists<br \/>\nof the homeland to an advanced<br \/>\ncivilization that sank beneath the ocean<br \/>\nfirst recorded in the writings of Plato<br \/>\nPlato and Homer however did allude to<br \/>\nthe sea of Atlas as a mythical sea<br \/>\nbeyond the pillars of Gibraltar but was<br \/>\nnever confirmed to exist until the<br \/>\nRomans served upon it as a transport<br \/>\nroute to Britain the name Atlantic Ocean<br \/>\nbecame more formally used by the Middle<br \/>\nAges its name being a relic of Asian<br \/>\npast when people search for the lost<br \/>\ncontinent of Atlantis finally we have<br \/>\nearth’s largest ocean the pacific ocean<br \/>\nman mattes though doodling justice<br \/>\nanyway in 1519 spain wanted to find a<br \/>\nwestern route to the Spice Islands of a<br \/>\nSouth America and enlisted Portuguese<br \/>\nnavigator Ferdinand de Magellan to find<br \/>\nthis route after tackling dangerous<br \/>\nwaters Ferdinand and his feats came to<br \/>\nunfamiliar calm waters he called these<br \/>\nwaters specific meaning peaceful which<br \/>\nwould later become the name we there as<br \/>\ntoday the Pacific Ocean weather an<br \/>\noceans name it comes from Greek<br \/>\nmythology it’s peaceful waters or just<br \/>\nwhere it is in the world you can<br \/>\nguarantee that what in them will be<br \/>\namazing and pretty terrifying hey there<br \/>\nguys thanks for making it to the end of<br \/>\nthe video if you enjoyed this then why<br \/>\nnot give it a thumbs up and if you think<br \/>\nyou
