Totally Trains

For some kids, there is nothing more exciting than a train. We use this motivational topic to deliver critical instruction and practice in mathematics-counting, addition, and the connections between the two. This book shares deep conceptual understanding, lots of procedural practice, and robust applications to help students apply these skills in a variety of contexts.

Why are we proud of this book?

We introduce addition early, on page 3. Then, we explore addition through many different aspects:

  • Counting purple and orange train cars to understand “in all”
  • Introducing word problems with picture supports so students can hear the math, see the math, and then do the math.
  • Conceptual instruction that the order of addition does not matter. Then, students put this into practice right away to see how 8 + 2 can be an easier way to solve 2 + 8.
  • Numerous pictures showing fingers and numbers to help students develop and explore key kindergarten strategies using their own hands.
    • Occasional questions asking students to identify what is “hard” (a beginning for metacognitive thinking that will help students manage their own learning)

What do you get?

  • 101 pages of exciting mathematics
  • Gorgeous illustrations and exciting train photographs
  • Answer key to help support student growth
