Application review is holistic in nature. However, a student’s high school academic record, including grade point average (weighted and unweighted) and class rank, receives significant emphasis in engineering admissions decisions.

Students who have taken and performed well in advanced courses, particularly in math, chemistry, and physics, are best prepared for the academic rigor of the College and are more competitive in the admissions process. Also considered are standardized test scores (SAT or ACT), and lastly, extracurricular activities and leadership experiences. The typical fall 2018 first-year student admitted to the College has an unweighted grade point average ranging from 3.75 – 4.0. Eighty percent of all new engineering freshmen are in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class. The middle 50 percent of incoming 2018 freshmen have SAT scores in the 1340-1450 range and 30-33 on the ACT.

How to Apply

Review our deadlines – The application will be available in August 2020 and we have two deadlines you may choose to apply by. You may choose to apply for early admission or standard admission. There are separate dates and requirements. Most people apply standard admission, but you have options.

Complete the application – Submit the application through the Common App or the Coalition App – we do not have a preference. This application is good for most of the colleges that you may be interested in applying.

Pay the application fee – There is an $85 application fee ($100 for international applicants). You can either pay it online or provide an official fee waiver.

Self-report your test scores – You should self-report your test scores on your application. Your application will include creating a new wolfPAW account, just for NC State. After you have applied, any additional test scores can be added on your wolfPAW account. We will not accept standardized test scores on your high school transcript. If you ultimately enroll at NC State, official SAT (Code # 5496) or ACT (Code # 3164) test scores will be required and should be sent directly from the testing agency.

SAT Essay or ACT Writing scores are not required. Scores received from test dates prior to the application deadline will be considered. We encourage you to take the SAT or ACT more than once and submit all your scores. We look at your highest sub-score from each section across your test dates to create a super-score. We cannot guarantee scores received after the application deadline will be used in your admission decision.

Submit your transcript – Official academic transcripts should be submitted by your high school counselor.

Check your status – We encourage you to check your wolfPAW account frequently throughout the application process. You can see which documents and test scores we have received or what may still be missing. Your wolfPAW account is also where we will notify you of your final admission decision.
