What is this chapter mainly about?

While speaking about Mrs. Dubose, Atticus tells the children, "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand."

Why does Atticus say that Mrs. Dubose was bravest person he ever knew?

In the last sentence of the first paragraph of Chapter 11, the narrator (Scout) says that previous "minor encounters" with Mrs. Dubose left her with no desire for more interaction with the old woman.
