Questions

1) What is the main idea of this chapter?

2) Basil is surprised that Dorian is not more upset by Sibyl's death. Dorian explains that he is already over his grief. He tells Basil, "I don't want to be at the mercy of my emotions. I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them."

What does "dominate" mean?

3) Basil wants to include the portrait in an upcoming exhibit, but Dorian won't hear of it. He reminds Basil of his words when the portrait was newly finished: "You can't have forgotten that you assured me most solemnly that nothing in the world would induce you to send it to any exhibition. You told Harry exactly the same thing."

What does "induce" mean?

4) What does Basil tell Dorian is "dearer to me than any fame or reputation"?

5) Basil explains to Dorian how his feelings about the portrait changed once it had left his studio. He now believes he was wrong to have imagined that it was different than any other painting. He says, "Art is more abstract than we fancy. Form and color tell us of form and color,——that is all."

What does "abstract" mean?

6) Dorian is relieved that Basil does not know the true secret of the portrait, but determines that he must hide the painting away for good. "He could not run such a risk of discovery again. It had been mad of him to have the thing remain, even for an hour, in a room to which any of his friends had access."

What does "access" mean?

7) What makes Dorian sweat in this chapter?

8) What does Dorian do with the portrait at the end of the chapter?

9) Were there any events that weren't clear to you?
