Questions

1) What is the main idea of this chapter?

2) Dorian was the last of the three men to arrive for dinner. He was very happy about his engagement and asked his friends to congratulate him. "He was flushed with excitement and pleasure, and looked extraordinarily handsome."

What does "flushed" mean?

3) How was Sybil on stage?

4) What inspired Sybil's performance?

5) Hallward tries to give Wotton credit for being a kinder man than his words would indicate, but Wotton won't allow it. He says, "The reason we all like to think so well of others is that we are all afraid for ourselves. The basis of optimism is sheer terror. We think that we are generous because we credit our neighbor with those virtues that are likely to benefit ourselves. We praise the banker that we may overdraw our account, and find good qualities in the highwayman in the hope that he may spare our pockets."

What does "spare" mean?

6) Lord Wotton offers a somewhat cynical view of Dorian's engagement. Rather than being offended, Dorian laughs and says, "You are quite incorrigible Harry; but, I don't mind. It is impossible to be angry with you."

What does "incorrigible" mean?

7) Basil Hallward travels alone to the theater, in a separate vehicle from the other two men. During the trip, a sense of loss comes over him.

By the time he arrives at the theater, how does he feel?

8) What happens to the portrait of Dorian Gray?

9) Were there any events that weren't clear to you?
